Scheduling a Conference:

All sign-ups will be facilitated through SignUp Genius. A link for sign ups is below.

6th  & 7th Grade conferences: The conference will be led by the student, and the four core teachers (Math, ELA, Social Studies, & Science) will be present during the conference. The time frame for the team conference will be 30 minutes. Please arrive a few minutes early with your child in order to allow your child to gather presentation information.

You will also have the option to sign up for a 15-minute conference with an elective teacher or with your child’s Reading teacher. Special Education teachers will be working with the core teams and will be available for “drop-in” meetings.

What to Expect?  Your child will be prepared to lead a 30-minute conference with you, examining his/her academic growth so far at North Middle School. The four team teachers will be present to assist in the meetings and answer questions you may have. Multiple conferences will take place at the same time. This is an excellent opportunity to reflect with your child on his or her learning.

8th Grade conferences: For 8th grade student conferences, you will be able to sign up for two 15-minute meetings with individual teachers (core content teachers, elective teachers, Reading teachers, and Special Education teachers  will all be included on the sign-up form).

Frequently Asked Questions regarding Parent-Teacher Conferences:

Q:  Are conferences mandatory?

A:  No, conferences are offered as a means of communication between home and school.  However, if your child is experiencing difficulties or if you have concerns, a conference is recommended.  In addition, we are always happy to celebrate your child’s academic achievements with you as well.

Q:  (6th & 7th Grade) What if my child has a team teacher on a different team?

A: On the evening of your conference you can inquire, and will be directed to the location of the cross-teamed teacher. You can drop in and visit with this teacher as well.

Q:  What if I can’t meet with a particular teacher I really need to speak with during conference days?

A:  Parents can arrange a meeting with an individual teacher, or schedule a team meeting, through their child’s teacher or school counselor at any time during the year.  The teachers on each team share a common plan hour and can invite the grade-level counselor and assistant principal as appropriate.

Q:  Can I meet with an off-team teacher (special education, elective, P.E., reading, etc.) instead of a team teacher?

A:  Yes, we do our best to arrange time for parents to meet with off-team teachers.  We would recommend that if you meet with an off-team teacher, you also take some time to meet with a team teacher as well.  However, in the event a teacher has already scheduled a conference during the time parents have requested, parents may schedule a conference through the guidance counselor to be held at another time during the year.

Q: What if I have multiple students at NMS?

A: You can schedule conferences for multiple students. You will be able to select the time of your conferences based on availability. You will want to visit the sign-up link right away for your choice of times.

Q:  While attending the parent-teacher conference meeting, can we make changes to my child’s IEP or 504 plan?

A:  Parent-teacher conferences are intended to help parents understand how a child is performing in a specific class.  Conversations should focus on how to help students be successful, yet changes to a student’s IEP or 504 require that the entire team be called together to discuss possible adjustments, modifications or accommodations.  An IEP team can include parents, the child’s special education case-manager, other special education teachers, regular education teachers, support service providers, counselors, administrators, and sometimes additional school personnel.   If you wish to discuss changes to your child’s IEP or 504, your child’s case-manager is willing to schedule a meeting with you and the team.
